Why does World Rabies Day matter for animal and human health?

What is the difference between rabies antigen and antibody rapid tests?
The difference is the detection target. An antigen test looks for viral antigen in the specified sample. An antibody test looks for antibodies against the virus. A positive result from one test does not have the same meaning as a positive result from the other.

Can a negative antigen rapid test rule out rabies?
No. A negative antigen rapid test result must not be used to rule out rabies infection. According to WHO, diagnosing rabies in living animals is difficult and strongly discouraged because sensitivity varies with disease stage, viral shedding, and other factors. Suspected cases require appropriate veterinary and public health investigation and laboratory testing under local protocols. WHO: Rabies diagnosis
Both product instructions state that a definitive diagnosis should not rely on a single test result. Veterinary assessment must consider the relevant clinical and laboratory findings.
Does an antibody-positive result prove protective immunity?
No. This qualitative antibody rapid test does not report a numerical antibody titre or establish protective immunity on its own. Its result must be interpreted in context, including vaccination history and any further testing required.
A qualitative antibody card should not be substituted for a required laboratory titre test. WHO describes specialised virus-neutralisation methods for measuring rabies virus-neutralising antibodies. Can animal testing replace vaccination or medical care after exposure?
No. Testing does not replace vaccination or timely medical assessment after a possible human exposure. A person bitten or scratched by a potentially rabid animal should wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention immediately. Samples from potentially infected animals require trained personnel, suitable protective measures, and safe disposal. Animal owners should contact a veterinarian rather than attempt to collect samples from an animal suspected of having rabies.
What should veterinary teams and distributors check before selecting a kit?
Start with the clinical question and the product’s instructions:
- Confirm whether the required target is viral antigen or antibodies.
- Check the intended species and permitted specimen type.
- Distinguish a qualitative result from a quantitative antibody titre.
- Follow the stated reading window and storage conditions.
- Establish how results will be reviewed and when referral or additional testing is required.
A short reading time is useful only when the sample, interpretation, and next steps are appropriate.
